The Balcony Vegetable Garden Seed Set by Radis et Capucine contains twelve different varieties of vegetables, herbs and flowers, all perfectly suited for growing in pots and containers on a balcony. No garden needed – a sunny balcony, a few containers and this set are all you need for your own mini vegetable garden.

Included: chives, 18-day radishes, carrots, cut-and-come-again lettuce, nasturtiums, sunflowers, peas, morning glory, basil, coriander, borage and catnip. A colourful mix of quick-harvest wins and long-term companions, plus flowers that attract pollinators.

What Can You Grow on a Balcony?

  • Radishes: Ready in just 18 days – perfect for impatient gardeners and children.
  • Cut-and-come-again lettuce: Harvest repeatedly; it regrows after cutting.
  • Herbs (basil, chives, coriander): Continuous harvest all summer long.
  • Peas: Climb vertically on strings – ideal for small spaces.
  • Carrots: Short varieties thrive in pots as shallow as 20 cm.

Balcony Gardening Basics

  1. Sun: At least 5–6 hours of direct sunlight. South-facing is ideal; lettuce and herbs manage with less.
  2. Containers: Minimum 20 cm deep for vegetables, 15 cm for herbs. Drainage holes are essential!
  3. Soil: Quality organic vegetable compost. Mix with perlite for better drainage in pots.
  4. Watering: Water in the morning, never during midday heat. Pots dry faster than garden beds.
  5. Feeding: After 4–6 weeks, add organic liquid fertiliser. Container plants need more nutrients.

Space-Saving Tips

  • Go vertical: Peas and morning glory climb strings and trellises – use height, not floor space.
  • Combine in one box: Radishes and lettuce share a container perfectly – radishes finish before lettuce needs the room.
  • Hanging pots: Nasturtiums trail beautifully – flowers and leaves are both edible.
  • Companion planting: Basil next to tomatoes repels aphids. Borage attracts bees that pollinate peas.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much sun does balcony veg need?
Most vegetables need 5–6 hours of direct sun. Lettuce and herbs manage with 3–4 hours.

What's the easiest to grow?
Radishes (18 days!), lettuce and chives are practically indestructible. Perfect for beginners.

Can I start indoors?
Yes! Sow basil, coriander and sunflowers indoors from March, then move outside after the last frost (mid-May).

What grows well together?
Basil + radishes, lettuce + carrots, peas + borage. Avoid: basil + chives (they inhibit each other).

Is a small balcony enough?
Absolutely. Just 2–3 window boxes and a few pots produce a surprising harvest.
