The Baobab (Adansonia digitata) is one of the most extraordinary trees on Earth. Revered in Africa as the «Tree of Life», it can live over 1,000 years and store up to 100,000 litres of water in its massive trunk. An African legend says God planted the Baobab upside down — which is why its bare branches look like roots reaching for the sky. Grow your own piece of Africa with these seeds.

Growing Guide: How to Sow

Baobab seeds have an extremely hard shell — in nature, only elephant stomach acid can soften it. You'll need to replicate this:

  1. Scarify: File or sand one spot on the seed coat until you see the lighter layer beneath. Don't go too deep.
  2. Soak: Pour boiling water over the seeds, let it cool, then soak for 24–48 hours. Seeds should visibly swell.
  3. Sow: Plant swollen seeds 2 cm deep in well-draining substrate (cactus mix or seed compost with sand).
  4. Germination: At 25–30 °C, seeds germinate in 7–21 days. A heat mat speeds things up significantly.

Care Tips

  • Indoor plant: Not frost-hardy — grow as a houseplant year-round in European climates.
  • Bottle shape: The iconic thick trunk develops with age. Encourage thickening by pruning the main stem at 30–40 cm.
  • Winter: Never below 12 °C. Leaf drop in winter is normal — they return in spring.

FAQ

Will it get huge indoors?
No. As a houseplant, expect 1–2 metres after 10 years with an attractively thickened trunk. Nothing like its wild 25-metre height.

Why is scarification essential?
Without breaking through the stone-hard shell, water cannot reach the embryo. Germination rate jumps from near 0 % to 60–80 % with proper preparation.

Can it go outside in summer?
Yes, from June to September in a warm sheltered spot. Bring indoors when temperatures drop below 12 °C.
