The Bean Sprouting Kit shows children very directly how a dry bean can become something alive. It comes with eight screw-top jars, each filled with vermiculite – a lightweight mineral substrate that stores water without turning to mush. Put the bean in, moisten it slightly, close the lid and then simply watch what happens every day. First it swells, then it cracks open, then the sprout comes out, and eventually there are two little leaves in the jar. The whole thing is so straightforward that you can easily keep a school class busy with it. It works just as well for biology lessons, project days or simply for trying out at home.
