About the Umbrella Pine
The Pinus pinea shapes the coastal landscapes of Italy, Spain and Greece. In the wild it grows 25–30 metres tall and develops the characteristic flat umbrella crown. As a bonsai it stays compact and brings Mediterranean flair to any windowsill or terrace. Fun fact: its cones contain the edible pine nuts (pinoli) that you know from Italian cuisine!
Care Tips
- Location: Sunny to semi-shaded, happy outdoors in summer
- Watering: Regular but no waterlogging. Use well-draining substrate
- Fertilising: From spring to autumn every 2 weeks with bonsai fertiliser
- Overwintering: Cool at 3–10 °C, protect from frost
- Repotting: Every 2–3 years in spring
