Japanese Maple seeds require cold stratification to break dormancy. Without this step, germination rates are near zero.
- Soak seeds: Place seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Discard any that float.
- Cold stratification (90 days): Wrap seeds in damp kitchen paper, place in a zip-lock bag, and refrigerate at 4–5 °C for at least 90 days. Check moisture weekly.
- Sow: Plant seeds 5 mm deep in well-draining, slightly acidic potting mix (pH 5.5–6.5).
- Germination: At 15–20 °C with consistent moisture, expect sprouts in 2–4 weeks.
